Only in four out of the original 25 nations [in Africa] are [chimpanzees] found in significant numbers, and even there the remaining populations are being increasingly fragmented by habitat destruction. The trouble is, human populations are mushrooming, needing ever more land for houses, growing crops, grazing cattle, needing ever more wood for cooking, for charcoal, for building poles. And, as forests are clear-cut, so the soil becomes infertile, water tables drop, deserts take over. |
